Artist's Statement

My career as a potter has allowed me to:
-express myself creatively in making clay objects for use in daily human life--mugs, bowls, pitchers, platters that are hand thrown one-of a kind pieces made with natural materials, care and attention and offered up to the fire for final decoration. I am inspired by the ceramics of Asian, Middle Eastern and British potters. Learning more about our planet, its gifts of clay and minerals, and the opportunity to look deeper and further, moves me. My wish is that my pieces be satisfying to the senses and have integrity. I care not whether they are deemed craft or art.

-present my work for sale primarily to those who will use it. Joining a farmer’s market many years ago provided a lovely way to be part of a community serving basic needs in a natural setting. Establishing, some 30 years ago, an annual Open House at my home, where I could present my work and that of other artists as we wished it to be seen has been likewise rewarding. I maintain a showroom that is open when I am here. Several galleries carry my work.and I enjoy the interaction with those who do this important work.

-share with others my love of clay, mostly working from my own studio. I am inspired by the enthusiasm of both young and old. A succession of apprentices has also enriched my life with their promise as it unfolds. The clay and art communities, and connections with friends and family, sustain me.
